Spell description
Upon completion of LIGHTRAY, one of the caster's index fingers emits a cone
of light in the direction it is pointed. At its maximum range, the ray illuminates
an area 2' in diameter, although the wizard can make the beam smaller and
shorter at will. The light produced by LIGHTRAY is roughly equivalent to
torchlight in brightness, and thus is unable to damage an opponent (if the
being is light-sensitive), nor is it of sufficient power to penetrate areas
of magical darkness. In addition, the LIGHTRAY is focused such that it does
not provide illumination outside its area, although the beam itself is visible
for up to 30 yards if there is no obstruction between the LIGHTRAY and the
observer. The caster may end the spell with a thought at any time before
the spell's duration is met.
The material component is a small candle.
This spell is especially useful for thieving, when it is often not desirable
to carry a lantern or torch, nor to attract attention with a regular LIGHT
spell. The LIGHTRAY spell enables a thief to see a lock clearly or search
a chest, etc. with far less chance of the light source being seen.
